Colorado police arrested a person suspected of locking eight puppies and two kittens in the trunk of a car over the summer.
The Colorado Springs Police Department executed an arrest warrant Wednesday for the suspect, who has not been identified, for nine counts of aggravated animal cruelty and and ten counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty, according to police records.
On Aug. 15, CSPD and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region’s Animal Law Enforcement responded to a call about dogs left inside the trunk of a car.
When they arrived, they could hear cries for help coming from inside the car, according to a Facebook post by the animal rescue organization. The owner opened the trunk, and what the officers found was "horrific."
Five of the eight puppies and both kittens were found dead. All the animals were severely underweight, with their bones showing through the skin. Two of the remaining puppies died after the rescue.
One puppy found in the car lived. She was named Griselda by the Humane Society and has since been adopted.
CSPD investigated the incident as animal cruelty before forwarding the case to the District Attorney's Office. The DA's office later issued an arrest warrant.
While conducting the arrest months later, officers saw a malnourished dog inside the same vehicle the puppies and kittens were found in. They also saw several malnourished dogs tied up in the back yard, records show.
Animal Law Enforcement also conducted a search warrant of the Colorado Springs residence where the primary suspect was arrested, and will later serve the suspect with 14 additional counts of animal cruelty, authorities said.
Seven adult dogs, 7 puppies and a turtle were removed from the residence as a result of the search.
